Dental Veneers

Rendering of jaw with porcelain veneer on toothYour smile can make or break a first impression of you. It is not fair, but it is truly a hard fact of life. We are a species that judges the warmth and openness of a smile to determine if somebody is a friend or a foe, and if someone is refusing to share their smile out of embarrassment, it can make it hard for them to forge new relationships. For our patients who may be struggling with personal shame due to the appearance of their teeth, we here at State Street Dental strongly believe that dental veneers can help them restore the appearance of their smile and help them feel happy and friendly once more.

What is a Dental Veneer?

A dental veneer is a type of dental restoration that can greatly improve the appearance of a patient’s smile. It consists of a thin porcelain sheet that is placed directly over the affected teeth. These are a durable, reliable, and long-lasting restoration option. Not only is it resistant to staining, but it is also quite strong and attractive.

Who Can a Dental Veneer Benefit?

Many patients can benefit from getting a dental veneer. Dental veneers can help improve the appearance of a myriad of cosmetic dental flaws. For patients who have teeth that are discolored and are resistant to whitening procedures, veneers can conceal these flaws. Dental veneers can also help improve the appearance of teeth that are uneven in size or shape. If there are uneven gaps or spaces between the teeth, veneers can also conceal these blemishes. Finally, if the teeth have minor chips or cracks in them, veneers can hide these flaws and help greatly improve the appearance of the teeth.

Placing a Dental Veneer

Getting a dental veneer generally takes up to two appointments to complete. This is because the veneer is a custom restoration, and it is manufactured in our lab. This helps make the veneer a comfortable and secure fit to the patient’s mouth.

During the first appointment, we will start by carefully etching the surface of the patient’s teeth with a specific type of acid to remove a trace amount of your enamel. This will help to make sure the veneer is a good fit in your mouth. Next, will take an impression of your teeth, which will go to our lab and be used to make sure your veneer is a custom fit.

While we are waiting for your veneer to return from our lab, we may fit you with a temporary veneer in the meanwhile. Once your veneer arrives back from our lab, we will have you return to our office for a final fitting for it. We will check the fit of the veneer to make sure it is comfortable and attractive. If we are both satisfied, we will then bond the veneer over your teeth and cure it.

You can expect your veneer to last several years if you are careful with them. Avoid biting hard objects, such as ink pen lids, your fingernails, or hard candies. Do not chew ice, as it can cause the veneer to chip. Regular appointments at our office, every six months, can also help maintain your veneer.

Getting dental veneers can make all the difference in how you feel about yourself.
