Dental exams are an essential component of helping you maintain the health of your mouth. Routine exams allow us to spot issues in their early stages before you ever notice anything is wrong. If you do notice symptoms of an oral health issue, dental exams enable us to get to the root of the problem so that we can provide you with the treatment you need. A major part of your dental exams is a visual inspection of the structures inside your mouth. Traditionally, this has been done with a small, handheld mirror. At State Street Dental, we can take a more in-depth look with an intraoral camera.
What is an Intraoral Camera? There are many structures inside your mouth that can be seen with the naked eye. However, some areas are a bit more difficult to examine thoroughly than others. Traditionally, we have examined the more difficult to see areas with a small metal mirror. Even with this mirror, views are still limited. Today, we can take a much better look inside your mouth with an intraoral camera.
An intraoral camera is a handheld wand about the size of a large pen. One end of this wand has a small optical camera on it. The other end of the wand is attached to a computer.
How Does an Intraoral Camera Work?During your exam, we place the camera inside your mouth as we examine the visible structures. We are then able to view these structures on the computer monitor in real time. We are also able to take still images of your mouth with this camera. This enables us to take a more in-depth look at specific areas of your mouth without you needing to keep your mouth open for long periods.
A Closer Examination of Your MouthWhen we take stills of your mouth, we can use specialized software to take a much closer look at specific areas. We can zoom in on these areas and enhance the images for greater clarity. This enables us to see the smallest details of your mouth for a more accurate diagnosis. By more accurately diagnosing oral health issues, we can provide you with a much more effective treatment.
Take a Look Inside Your MouthFor some patients, dental exams can be unnerving because they do not know what is happening inside your mouth. Some people may not understand the severity of an issue or believe that it is as bad as it is. With an intraoral camera, you can see everything that we see. You are better able to understand your diagnosis and why we are recommending specific treatments. For patients with anxiety, this can help to make the process of getting dental care easier.
More Comfortable Dental ExamsTraditionally, to thoroughly examine your mouth, you would have to keep your mouth open for long periods. We would also have to remain bent over near your face. With the intraoral camera, however, we can take extra time to more closely examine your mouth. You do not need to keep your mouth open for long periods or worry about us sitting so close to you. At the same time, it is also more physically comfortable for us not having to sit bent over for long periods.
With an intraoral camera, we can take a much closer look at the visible structures in your mouth, providing more accurate diagnoses as well as providing the best treatments possible. Call State Street Dental today at (971) 332-3020 to learn more.
